Sabres', Oilers' Off-Season Events Showcase Marquee Rookies

The Sabres today open their summer development camp at First Niagara Center, "meaning the first in-the-flesh, on-the-ice look" at highly touted rookie Jack Eichel. The team is charging $10 to Friday's scrimmage, which "has been a free event" in the past. A crowd of 12,000-15,000 is expected. Sessions starting today are "open to the public" (BUFFALO NEWS, 7/6).

Meanwhile, a crowd of about 3,500 attended sessions of the Oilers' six-day rookie camp Friday at Rexall Place, marking the "first time proceedings were open to the public." The Oilers usually hold the camp in a "small rink on the outskirts of Edmonton but moved the training sessions to their home arena to accommodate fans eager for a first look" at overall No. 1 pick Connor McDavid (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/4).
