Soccer Exhibition Matches Draw Big Crowds Throughout U.S.
In a busy night of soccer friendlies throughout North America, Manchester United "opened its U.S. tour" before a crowd of 86,432 at the Rose Bowl. The EPL club beat the Galaxy 7-0 in the Chevrolet Cup (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/24). Liverpool and AS Roma played in an exhibition at a sold out Fenway Park last night, and Liverpool Red jerseys "dotted the stands." This was "not a baseball crossover crowd" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/24). Other soccer exhibition attendance figures from yesterday:
- A sellout crowd of 22,591 attended Tottenham Hotspur-Toronto FC at BMO Field.
- More than 18,000 fans were on hand for Manchester City-Sporting KC at Sporting Park.
- A crowd of 15,102 attended the AS Monaco-Atletico Nacional friendly at Marlins Park, where fans of the Colombian club provided a "rocking support system."
- Glasgow Rangers-NASL Ottawa Fury at TD Place drew an "enthisiastic" crowd of 8,643.
