McIlroy Helps British Open Eclipse Last Year's Attendance Numbers

The British Open at Royal Liverpool drew a Sunday crowd of 42,149, up 31% from the final round at Muirfield in '13. The tournament for the week drew 202,917 fans, up 30% from last year's 142,036. Fans said that Rory McIlroy being in contention was a "big factor in choosing to attend the final day." Attendance was "down slightly from 2006 when the event was last staged in Hoylake and Tiger Woods won." The crowds at times "were almost more than security could handle," and McIlroy "had a heckler tossed after teeing off" on 16 (GOLF.com, 7/20).
