Goodell Says Expanding NFL Playoffs Unlikely To Occur Before '15

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appeared on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" last night and said expanding the playoffs probably would not occur for the '14 season. Goodell: "I would be surprised if it happens this year. I think if it happened, it probably wouldn't happen before '15." A vote on the issue could occur this year for the '15 season, and the "big discussion would be the first weekend, the Wild Card weekend of playoffs." Goodell: "How would you structure that? Three on Saturday? Three on Sunday? We're looking at every alternative."

Goodell also discussed the possibility of eliminating the extra point. He said, "One of the issues that has happened is the extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1200-some-odd. So it's a very small fraction of the play and you want to add excitement with every play" ("NFL Total Access," NFL Network, 1/20).

Cleveland's Pro Teams To Argue For Ballot Measure On Sin Tax

Indians, Cavaliers and Browns officials today will join other members of Cleveland's corporate community in trying to make the case to the City Council to "put a ballot proposal before voters in May that would extend the current county-wide taxes on alcohol and tobacco." The teams say that "renewing the sin tax is necessary to cover the costs of desperately needed repairs and upgrades at the publicly owned sports facilities." Without an extension of the tax, the city and county general funds "could be tapped for repairs" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 1/21).

Car Brands Draw Inspiration From Classic TV For Super Bowl Ads

Two carmakers today will unveil plans for ads during Fox' Feb. 2 Super Bowl telecast, and both spots incorporate themes from classic TV. Volkswagen today will roll out its teaser spot that features former "Baywatch" star Carmen Electra "washing a VW Passat in a funny ad also loaded with elements of famous Super Bowl ads of the past" (USA TODAY, 1/21).

Also today, Greek yogurt brand Chobani will formally announce plans for its "first Super Bowl appearance." Its 60-second ad is "scheduled for the third quarter" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/21).

Current union Exec Dir Tony Clark hosted the program. Weiner, who died Nov. 21, hosted a memorial service for Marvin Miller "exactly one year earlier" (AP, 1/21).

Cartoonists Rip Seahawks CB Richard Sherman For Postgame Rant

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman's postgame interview with Fox' Erin Andrews continues to figure prominently in the sports news cycle, the latest example of this being a series of editorial cartoons on the subject. A cartoon from the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE shows Sherman with his mouth stitched shut and the caption, "Football stitching we'd like to see." An S.F. CHRONICLE cartoon hints that all the hot air coming from Sherman's mouth may be keeping rain away (THE DAILY).

LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 1/21).

Night Moves....Fight Club

The 1:00am ET editions of ESPN's "SportsCenter" and FS1's "Fox Sports Live" both had predictable line-ups of basketball highlights. ESPN led with NBA and then several college hoops reports before reporting on the aftermath of Richard Sherman's postgame outburst about seven minutes into the broadcast. FS1 was more college hoops-dominated, while their first non-basketball report was Patriots coach Bill Belichick calling out Broncos WR Wes Welker for his hit on Patriots CB Aqib Talib.

ESPN's Keith Olbermann called out his "world's worst" persons in sports: the "soon to be ex-coach" of the Canucks John Tortorella, whose team has a "capacity for gratuitous violence." The runners-up: Buccaneers WR Tom Crabtree got into a Twitter fight with actor Samuel L. Jackson and took a "snarky and self-deprecating shot at Richard Sherman," while the Dolphins were called out for how they handled their trade of WR Davone Bess to the Browns last year. Bess was a "guy they knew was functionally dependent or maybe going nuts," and the team did not inform the Browns of his past behavior.

Laugh Track....In The Weeds

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “The matchup for Super Bowl XLVIII is set. The Denver Broncos will meet the Seattle Seahawks. Both states that legalized marijuana will be represented on the biggest day of the year for snacks. The game will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, assuming the players can answer Chris Christie’s riddle. You have to answer the riddle to be allowed to cross his bridge. This has been an historic season for quarterback Peyton Manning. At 37 years old, he set the single-season record for touchdown passes, passing yards and Papa John's commercials, which is incredible (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/20).

Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert began the broadcast by noting he was "still recovering from" Sunday's NFL playoff games. Colbert: "What a performance by Peyton Manning, the Denver QB, or Quick Boy, who this season has set a league record for screaming the word 'Omaha.'" Colbert noted Hotels.com reported that searches for hotels in Omaha have increased 21% since Manning began shouting "Omaha." Colbert added, "That's how I plan all my family's vacations. I just turn on the TV and I book tickets for the first city I hear someone shout" ("The Colbert Report," Comedy Central, 1/20).

Colbert also pointed out that the two Super Bowl teams "hail from the states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use, unlike other states which have legalized medical marijuana for recreational use." Colbert: "Pot and football do not mix, they're like oil and water, or baseball and excitement. And once the NFL starts catering to these teams' doobie-toking fans, football will be ruined. Before you know it, all the Super Bowl commercials are going to be for munchies and all of the ads are going to have freaky talking babies and animals. I say save it for the commercials at Burning Man, you hippies" ("The Colbert Report," Comedy Central, 1/20).

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart said, "We are less than two weeks away from the biggest sporting event of the year, Super Bowl XLVIII. Unfortunately, past Super Bowls have been plagued by shortages of necessary Super Bowling materials." The show ran clips from two news reports about a possible chicken-wing shortage and, in the Dallas area, a shortage of strippers, which Stewart said was "not funny." Stewart: "This year, the matchup is between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos, two teams hailing from states that have both legalized marijuana, which makes this year's shortage all the more tragic" ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," Comedy Central, 1/20).
