WNBA Finals Game 3 Draws Crowd Of 5,040 As Lynx Sweep Dream

The series-clinching Lynx-Dream WNBA Finals Game 3 drew 5,040 fans to Gwinnett Center last night. The Dream, who were forced to move from Philips Arena to Gwinnett for the WNBA Finals because the club’s normal home was already hosting Disney on Ice, averaged 5,853 during the regular season. Games 1 and 2 drew 13,804 and 12,313 fans, respectively, to Target Center (THE DAILY).

The Lynx won their second championship in three years, with G Maya Moore winning MVP. Both the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press go with Lynx stories above the fold on the front page. The Star Tribune's Kent Youngblood writes, "Let the dynasty talk begin." The Pioneer Press' Tim Leighton writes under the header, "Minnesota Lynx Return To WNBA Throne With Sweep Through Postseason." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Doug Roberson writes under the header, "Dream Swept By Maya Moore, Minnesota."

Fox Networks Distribution President Leaving To Become Hulu CEO

By John Ourand

Fox Networks Distribution President Mike Hopkins is leaving the company to become Hulu CEO, sources confirmed. Bloomberg broke the story last night. Hopkins is leaving as Fox enters critical carriage negotiations with Time Warner Cable over YES Network. Fox also has big deals with cable operators Cox and Charter ending soon for networks that include FS1 and RSNs, sources said. It is not clear how Fox plans to replace Hopkins, but Exec VP Michael Biard is considered the clear front runner to take over.

Hopkins is the second senior exec to leave Fox' distribution group in a month. Senior VP/Distribution & Marketing Sean Riley left the company in September after nearly 16 years. Hopkins also joined Fox' cable affiliate group around 16 years ago. He took over as the group's top exec in '07, replacing Lindsay Gardner. During that time he negotiated to get Big Ten Network launched and convinced distributors to switch from Speed to FS1 earlier this year.

Chuck Hagel Decides Sports At Service Academies Will Go On

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel "has decided that football games and other sports will go on at the service academies this weekend and continue through the end of the month" despite the government shutdown. Pentagon spokesperson Col. Steve Warren said that Hagel "will reassess the issue later this month if Congress still has not passed a budget to fund the federal government." Game expenses are "largely paid for with funds that come from outside sources and are not approved through Congress" (AP, 10/10).

Redskins' Name Controversy Gets Front-Page Treatment

The controversy over the Redskins' name continues to have traction in the national media. USA Today runs a front-page piece that highlights Graylan Hagler, the DC preacher who "has denounced the team name" for the past 20 years. Also in USA Today, columnist Christine Brennan writes under the header and sub-head, "Make No Mistake: Snyder's On The Clock ... Redskins name will change sooner, not later." The WASHINGTON POST's Sally Jenkins parodies Redskins Owner Dan Snyder's recent letter to fans under the header, "Another Letter, The Same Spirit."

The Cleveland PLAIN DEALER covers the controversy as it relates to the Indians' moniker and logo. Jeff Darcy writes, "Time to strike out Chief Wahoo and sack the Redskin name. It's 2013." Mark Maymik writes, "The Indians and Chief Wahoo could be next. At least I hope so."

Chargers "Very Likely" To Face Local TV Blackout Of "MNF" Game

A Chargers team source said a local TV blackout is "very likely" for Monday's home game against the Colts, as more than 9,000 general tickets remained unsold as of yesterday. This would be the first "MNF" game blacked out since the Falcons hosted the 49ers on Jan. 3, 2000. An announcement on the blackout "could come as early as the Friday deadline at 5:40pm PT" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/11). Chargers TE Antonio Gates said, "It's unfortunate. You want to think that you have true fans. ... It's crazy that it's hard to sell out a Monday Night game" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/11).

Shutdown Could Force N.Y. Marathon To Change Launch Spot

ING N.Y. Marathon officials said that they are "considering other staging sites" for the Nov. 3 race because Fort Wadsworth, where the race launches, is "closed due to the federal government shutdown." N.Y. Road Runners is "about 70% finished with a contingency plan for a second staging location." NYRR CEO Mary Wittenberg said that the location "would still be in Staten Island" and that the organization next week will "decide whether to proceed with two separate plans for staging" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/11).

Meanwhile, Wittenberg said that "as many as 3,000 charity spots remain available for would-be runners" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/11).

Griffin said when Doc Rivers was hired as the Clippers coach, he left a voicemail for Griffin and "he was like, 'Hey, this is Doc Rivers, your new coach,' and I was like, 'Yeah.'" Who (EXPLETIVE) cares? He fooled some French people." Albergotti: "It's really not just about cheating in cycling. Cheating in sports, you're right, is not a crime in the U.S. But what this book is really about is the whole conspiracy around covering up for the cheating in that race and all the people who sort of told the truth over the years and who were confronted with lawsuits, threats from Lance and people around him" ("The Colbert Report," Comedy Central, 10/10).
