Wells Fargo Inks Its First League-Level Deal With MLS, SUM

Wells Fargo has signed a multiyear deal with MLS and Soccer United Marketing, marking the financial institution’s first sponsorship of a national sports league to go along with its numerous team and venue deals. The partnership will be announced prior to the AT&T MLS All-Star Game tonight in K.C. Financial terms were not available. Wells Fargo becomes the exclusive retail banking and commercial lending sponsor of MLS. Among other deal points, Wells Fargo receives MLS intellectual property, fieldboard advertising on nationally televised games and support from national broadcast partners and MLS Digital Properties.

USA Basketball Moving HQs To Tempe As Part Of USA Place

USA Basketball officials today will announce that they are relocating their HQs to Tempe as part of USA Place, a $350M Arizona State Univ. development project that "includes a conference center and hotel." USA Basketball Chair Jerry Colangelo said that the men's and women's senior teams "will use the Tempe facility at times." The facility will include five courts and two half-courts. The NGB has been based in Colorado Springs since '93 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/31).

Intuit Holding Contest To Give One Small Business A Super Bowl Spot

Software company Intuit today is kicking off a contest that will award one small business with a 30-second spot during the third quarter of Fox' Super Bowl XLVIII telecast on Feb. 2. Intuit, whose products include TurboTax and QuickBooks, recruited reality TV personality Bill Rancic and Fox NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson to "promote the contest." Intuit "will create videos describing each business and will post them on SmallBusinessBigGame.com." Voting opens to the public Nov. 11 (USA TODAY, 7/31).

Gillette Rolling Out Weekly Web Videos From NFL Training Camps

Gillette today is unveiling the first of six weekly web episodes featuring NFL players at training camp. Produced by NFL Media, the episodes, which will run exclusively on NFL.com, feature veterans tutoring rookies about training camp. The veteran-rookie pairings featured in the series include Broncos DBs Champ Bailey and Kayvon Webster, Steelers OLs Ramon Foster and Mike Golic Jr. and Bengals RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard. The program is titled Gillette Clear Gel’s “Built for Training,” and they will run every Tuesday through Sept. 3. Each episode is 4-5 minutes long. Clear Gel is a Gillette deodorant.

MLB, MLBPA Seeking Agreement On Biogenesis Punishments

MLB has informed the MLBPA "which players it intends to suspend in its drug investigation and which ones will receive lengthier penalties for their roles in the Biogenesis case." The sides are "trying to reach as many agreements as possible that would avoid grievance hearings, and talks could push back an announcement until Friday" (AP, 7/31). Sources said that "not all of the players linked to Biogenesis in media reports face discipline." Blue Jays LF Melky Cabrera and A's P Bartolo Colon "will not be punished because they already have been suspended" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/31).

Columbia Capital, Rho Ventures Invest In Mandalay Sports Media

Private equity firms Columbia Capital and Rho Ventures completed an undisclosed investment in Mandalay Sports Media that will allow the year-old company to grow its content business and acquire some sports media entities – including programming or companies – and invest in others. As part of the investment, Columbia Capital and Rho Ventures will take minority equity stakes in Mandalay Sports Media. Columbia Capital partner Jeff Patterson and Rho Ventures Managing Partner Mark Leschly will join the company's BOD.

MLB Network Lines Up Extensive Trade Deadline Coverage

MLB's trade deadline is today at 4:00pm ET, and MLB Network is airing "17 hours of live coverage" leading up to the deadline. A six-hour "MLB Tonight: Trade Deadline Special" starts at 11:00am. The net's Peter Gammons, Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal "will have live cameras positioned inside their offices throughout the day." Other MLB Network correspondents, such as MLB.com's Richard Justice, USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers and N.Y. Post's Joel Sherman "will report breaking news from their cities" (SI.com, 7/28).

Dodgers Will Prep For Int'l Soccer Matches After Yankees Game

The Dodgers after tonight's game against the Yankees will begin converting Dodger Stadium into a soccer venue for the L.A. leg of the inaugural Guinness Int'l Champions Cup, which begins Friday and will feature Real Madrid, Everton, Juventus and the MLS Galaxy. No seats will be added, but there will be "plenty of dirt to remove from the mound and sod to add." The grass will be "maintained at baseball length." Head groundskeeper Eric Hansen: "This is going to be a learning process for us" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 7/31).

Meanwhile, "Hollywood was everywhere" at last night's Yankees-Dodgers game, but the "most glamorous part of it all was the baseball." Celebrities in attendance for the game, a 3-2 Dodgers win, included Thunder F Kevin Durant, Clippers G Chris Paul, Jay-Z, Mel Brooks and Ice Cube (L.A. TIMES, 7/31).

Two Years Out From '15 Special Olympics World Games In L.A.

Yesterday marked the start of a two-year countdown to the '15 Special Olympics World Summer Games in L.A., and "work is focused on raising" the $90M needed "to prepare for the athletes who will compete in 26 events throughout the L.A. region." Two Olympic Villages will be set up at USC and UCLA. More than 500,000 spectators and visitors are "expected to visit the city for the Games." President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will serve as honorary co-Chairs (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 7/31).

Towson Univ. today will formally announce that SECU has “signed on as the naming-rights partner” of the school’s new $62M arena. Towson retained Team Services LLC to “help sell the deal.” The new logo design on the arena’s basketball floor will also be unveiled (BIZJOURNALS.com, 7/30).

Last night’s D’Backs-Rays game at Tropicana Field was delayed for about 10 minutes during the second inning after the “lights flickered a few times and several banks of lights went completely out” (CBSSPORTS.com, 7/30).

EA and FC Barcelona today announced a three-year partnership that makes EA Sports the exclusive and official video game partner of the La Liga club (EA).

The Ladies Golf Union announced that the '15 Ricoh Women’s British Open will be played on the Ailsa course in Turnberry, Scotland. The '14 tournament will be played at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England (THE DAILY).

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) today is expected to announce that it has reached a multiyear deal making Continental Tire the exclusive tire supplier in three classes during next year’s inaugural United SportsCar Racing season (THE DAILY).

ESPN announced that the '13 Armed Forces Classic will be played at Camp Humphreys in South Korea on Nov. 8. The game will pit Georgetown against Oregon as part of the net’s Veteran’s Week initiative (ESPN).

Laugh Track....The Court Has Spoken

Last night's edition of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" featured guest host John Oliver playing the role of "Judge Johnny" in a parody of a TV judge show. Correspondent Jason Jones said, "Our next defendant is the only cyclist anyone has ever heard of, having won the Tour de France an unprecedented seven times after taking an unprecedented amount of steroids, he's perhaps best known for having one tomato under his carrot. He is, of course, noted (EXPLETIVE) Lance Armstrong." Oliver noted Armstrong is "being sued by the DOJ" for $120M for "cheating when he was sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service." The broadcast aired news clips that said Armstrong's defense is that he was lying and the USPS should have known he was lying, with Oliver noting, "This guy has got a lot of ball. He isn't just pleading not guilty here, he's pleading so guilty it's your fault for not knowing how guilty he is." Oliver made his ruling and said, "On the basis of this world-record narcissism, I find the defendant a giant douche" ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," Comedy Central, 7/30).

NBC’s Jay Leno: “The NFL training camps opened up last week. Players said it's nice to be under the lights again, you know, besides the one in the interrogation rooms” ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 7/30).
