Large, Festive Crowds Expected For Del Mar's Opening Day

Opening day at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is set for today, and track officials are "expecting a similar" attendance number to last year's mark of 47,339. The "top four most attended days in the track's history are the last four opening days" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/17). This is the "one day of the year when Southern California horse racing fans forget about any troubles surrounding the sport." Colorful hats "pop up as if it were the Kentucky Derby and fields are so full that no one worries whether there's a shortage of horses" (L.A. TIMES, 7/17).
