Clippers, Celtics Reach Agreement To Trade Doc Rivers

The Clippers and Celtics yesterday "finally reached an agreement in principle" that would send coach Doc Rivers to L.A. in exchange for a first-round draft pick in '15. The Clippers will take on the three years and $21M remaining on the five-year deal Rivers signed with the Celtics in '11. The deal "won't become official until the NBA approves it." The league offices reopen today after being closed yesterday (L.A. TIMES, 6/24).

ESPNLA.com's Arash Markazi writes the perception of the Clippers has "changed forever" with this deal, as they "went from unwilling to pay a coach a reasonable salary to acquiring the highest-paid coach in the NBA." The Clippers are "no longer simply changing their culture and becoming more respectable." Their "metamorphosis from laughing stock to championship contender is complete" (ESPNLA.com, 6/23).
