PGA Tour Pros To Reenact '56 Match-Play Event At Cypress Point

Cypress Point Club outside Monterey, Calif., today will host a "reenactment of golf's most famous four-ball match," a '56 contest in which Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson took on Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward. In this version, Fred Couples and Davis Love III will assume the roles of the "elder statesmen" Hogan and Nelson, while Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson will be the "fresh-faced upstarts." The match, the "brainchild of PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem," is being staged as a "thank you to the major donors to the First Tee" (GOLF.com, 10/7).
