Brooklyn Abuzz As Nets Host Barclays Center Ribbon-Cutting

The Nets today will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Barclays Center in Brooklyn, beginning with an "invitation-only press event" at 9:30am ET. An hour before the ceremony begins, "demonstrators were expected to take up stations across the street to protest the lack of a groundbreaking" on other Atlantic Yards projects (Bergen RECORD, 9/21). The first event held there will be a Jay-Z concert on Saturday night (THE DAILY).

A N.Y. DAILY NEWS editorial states the arena is "testament to New York's vitality, to the dramatically rising spirit of the city's most populous borough and to the perseverance of developer Bruce Ratner." The buzz generated by the new venue is "so strong, you can almost hear it." Barclays Center is the "perfect symbol of a remarkable resurgence of a borough that many consider the definition of hip and whose downtown commercial heart has become a jobs factory" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/21).
