Jaguars Still Have 6,000-Plus Unsold Tickets For Home Opener

More than 6,000 tickets remained unsold as of last night for the Jaguars' season-opener Sunday at home against the Titans, and Owner Wayne Weaver said that the Jaguars would "probably ask for a 24-hour extension" from the league today. Weaver was "adamant that the game wouldn't be blacked out" locally "because he just can't stomach Jacksonville, a military city, not being able to see football on the 10th anniversary of 9/11." The team "will either pay 34 cents on the dollar to buy the remaining tickets or use a portion of the 17,000 comp tickets the NFL allows over the entire year" (JACKSONVILLE.com, 9/7).

Meanwhile, the Jaguars released QB David Garrard hours after he participated in the team's kickoff luncheon earlier this week. PR firm Prinicple Creative's Renay Daigle said, "It sends a very negative message. ... It does not make me want to run out and buy a ticket. There has to be a better way than firing somebody right before the first game" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 9/8).
