Sources: MLB Ready To Provide Dodgers With Bankruptcy Financing

By Daniel Kaplan

MLB plans to tell a Delaware federal bankruptcy court today it is prepared to provide alternative financing to the Dodgers, sources said. The Dodgers and four related entities filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday, and asked the court to approve a high interest rate $150M loan from a hedge fund in order to allow the team to meet payroll Thursday. A hearing is set for 1:30pm ET today.

However, MLB, which the Dodgers accuse of forcing the bankruptcy move by turning down a team deal with Fox last week, is planning to offer its own emergency, or debtor in possession (DIP), financing, the sources said. The move is not unprecedented. Last year MLB provided DIP financing for the Rangers during their bankruptcy, though the amount, $21.5M, is far less than what the Dodgers have arranged through HighBridge Capital, a unit of JPMorgan Chase.

Meanwhile, Jamie McCourt, whose divorce from Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt triggered the team’s financial situation, will have a legal representative in the courtroom today, her spokesperson said. Her lawyer, David Boies, issued a statement yesterday blasting the bankruptcy filing.

David Stern To Update NBA BOG Members On Labor Negotiations

By John Lombardo

The NBA BOG will convene today in Dallas, where NBA Commissioner David Stern will update owners on collective bargaining talks as a lockout looms. The BOG meeting comes just two days before the current CBA between the league and the NBPA is set to expire at the end of the day Thursday. Labor talks between the league and the union could continue in N.Y. tomorrow or Thursday, though specifics have not been finalized.

NBA owners also will be briefed on plans to retool the league’s current revenue-sharing structure. The effort to create a new revenue-sharing plan is spearheaded by the league’s planning committee chaired by Celtics Managing Partner & CEO Wyc Grousbeck. Other items on the agenda in Dallas include an overview of league financial information.

In Minnesota, A Fifth Round Of "Secret" NFL Labor Talks

NFLPA reps involved in labor talks with the NFL traveled to Minnesota yesterday for "a fifth round of 'secret talks' with the league," according to a source. Minnesota is home to Arthur Boylan, the federal magistrate assigned to run court-ordered mediation who has been present for previous talks. Talks are expected to continue into next month, and "time is of the essence," as "significant work must be done before the parties can strike a deal." The Rams and Bears, who are scheduled to play the '11 HOF Game, are "set to open training camp just three weeks from Friday" (NFL.com, 6/27).

Laugh Track....

CBS’ David Letterman: “Beautiful day in New York City today, 82 and sunny. Just like Whitey Bulger. … Let me give you a tip if you've never been to New York City before: We have many sidewalk cafes, outdoor restaurants, that kind of thing. During your meal if a woman comes up to you and wants to run through the evening specials, she may not be a waitress. … How many people are here tonight on your gay honeymoon? New York State Governor Cuomo legalized gay marriage, and I think it's great for everybody, honestly. Especially divorce lawyers, you know what I mean? … But with marriage, responsibility, and I'm sure gay people, members of this community, are aware of the responsibility of marriage. You've got to make decisions. You have to decide, for example, once you're married, who stays in bed, who goes downstairs to see what the noise was? … Anybody here for the gay pride parade yesterday? I went dressed as Michele Bachmann. … Remember Rod Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois? He was tried a year ago and then re-tried and today they came back with a guilty verdict. Thank you, Seal Team Six. … Now here's kind of an unpleasant story, so I saved it for last. You all know Kim Kardashian? And she's known for many things – well, actually just one, really – and people were speculating that she'd had some sort of enhancement surgery on her ass. So she called her doctor and he said, ‘We can put an end to this speculation about your ass.’ He said, ‘Swing by and we’ll X-ray it.’ I’ve tried that line myself! … So she had her ass X-rayed. No implants. So he released the X-rays and people can now see that there are no implants, nothing there. Then she had her head X-rayed. Nothing there either” (“Late Show,” CBS, 6/27).

NBC's "The Tonight Show" is airing reruns all week.

LATE NIGHT LAUGHS:

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “In baseball, the Dodgers today filed for bankruptcy protection. I don't know how an organization that sells a beer for $12 runs out of money, but they did. They made some bad financial moves. In the offseason, instead of spending $25 million on a pitcher, they signed a belly-itcher, and that really hurt them. … It's pathetic. It really is. Their Fourth of July fireworks show, they do this every year, this year it's going to be three stoners with disposable lighters running around the infield. But the good news is, we don't need baseball. Season five of ‘Celebrity Rehab’ premiered last night on VH1” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/27).
