Bruins Beat Canucks In Game Seven, Win First Stanley Cup In 39 Years

The Bruins last night won their sixth Stanley Cup and their first in 39 years, defeating the Canucks 4-0 in Game Seven in Vancouver. The Boston area "exploded in collective joy" after the game, as "thousands of electrified fans rushed into city streets, leaping through the night and embracing strangers in a euphoric celebration" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/16). Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will meet this morning with team officials to "work out details" for a championship parade. Officials said the parade will be held Friday or Saturday. Menino is "slated to speak Saturday at the U.S. Conference of Mayors" in DC, but his schedule "may be changed to accommodate the team" (BOSTON HERALD, 6/16).

NBC's Matt Lauer opened the "Today" show by congratulating the Bruins and holding up the front page of the Boston Globe before reporting on the postgame riots in Vancouver ("Today," NBC, 6/15).

page ad congratulating Bruins
Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs said, "I guess there is a Santa Claus" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/16). The Patriots' official Twitter feed posted, "Krafts extend kudos to Stanley Cup Champs w/full page ads in Thursday's papers. Congratulations to! Tremendous team effort" (TWITTER.com, 6/15).

TD Garden last night hosted a party for about 300 Bruins and arena employees and their families. TD Garden President John Wentzell said that "he had wanted to invite the public for a viewing party, but that was nixed by city officials, who worried about large crowds downtown becoming unruly after the game" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/16).
