CBS, SI Partner To Investigate College Football Players' Police Records

SI and CBS News have collaborated on a special college football investigation that aired this morning on CBS' "The Early Show." Their six-month study found that 7% of the 2,837 athletes on rosters of SI's '10 preseason top 25-ranked teams have police records. Nearly 40% of the alleged offenses were serious incidents such as assault and battery, domestic violence and sex offenses. The investigation also found that only two of the top 25 schools conduct regular criminal background checks of potential recruits, and none review juvenile records.

In addition to the airing on "The Early Show," the research compiled from more than 7,000 records checks will be featured on CBSNews.com, "The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric," this week's issue of SI and SI.com. The collaboration between the two media organizations was driven in part by Armen Keteyian, CBS News' chief investigative correspondent and a writer/reporter for SI during the '80s.
