Charlie Baker: NCAA needs 'consumer protections' for NIL

NCAA President Charlie Baker said one of his first priorities to address is “trying to create some ‘consumer protections’ for families and student-athletes" around NIL. Baker: “I would really like to see some sort of uniformed standard contract so that when somebody signs it they know they’re signing the same kind of agreement everybody else is signing.” Baker said to accomplish that goal “we’re going to talk some with the folks in Washington about this." Baker: “They’ve been hearing from a lot of the same people I’ve been hearing from, but I think it’s incumbent on the NCAA to also develop a program that we believe we could implement if the Feds can’t actually put something together on their own.” Turner's Charles Barkley said he would “go to people who actually care about basketball” and establish a “committee." Barkley: “Get some coaches, get some players and let’s try and work this thing out." Kellogg said the NCAA could come up with “boundaries around NIL because it’s here to stay, long overdue" and the NCAA "needs to be proactive because they’ve been forced to adjust on the fly.” Kellogg said, “now there’s an opportunity to recalibrate, reset and hopefully they’ll be proactive here in trying to lay the groundwork.” Turner’s Kenny Smith said the NCAA is the “one institution who doesn’t actually pay the players who actually makes the money off of them." Smith: "If they had initially created some rules and regulations then you wouldn’t have to worry about the NIL situation because the rules would have already been set" (“Tournament Central,” CBS, 3/23).
