Winter Classic seeing record ticket demand; sponsors line up activation

Tickets to the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park are on pace to be the most expensive in the history of the NHL’s tentpole event, according to secondary ticket marketplace TickPick. The average purchase price for tickets to the Bruins-Penguins matchup was $632 as of yesterday afternoon, more than double the price of last year’s Winter Classic between the Wild and Blues at Target Field. The average price this year is also 80% higher than the 2016 edition between the Bruins and Canadiens at Gillette Stadium, the last time the Bruins hosted the event. The get-in price on TickPick as of Wednesday was $396.

SPONSOR ACTIVATION: Winter Classic title sponsor Discover will deliver several experiential activations this weekend at the NHL Winter Classic Plaza and on Monday at Fenway Park. At the Legends Lodge, fans will have opportunities to take photos on a giant ice throne, watch live ice carving and receive several giveaways. The Lodge also will be integrated into TNT’s telecast of the game. Discover’s footprint will include a giant air hockey table, where NHL legends and social influencers The Hockey Guys will be on site. Other brands activating this weekend at the NHL Winter Classic Plaza include BioSteel, Caterpillar, DraftKings, Extreme Networks, Fanatics, Fastenal/MCR Safety, Great Clips, Hockey Fights Cancer, Honda, NHL Network, Truly Hard Seltzer, Upper Deck and Verizon. Other notable partnership activity:

  • Navy Federal Credit Union will unfurl the American Flag over Fenway Park’s Green Monster outfield wall with 60 military members and present the color guard. The company and the NHL also will launch the fifth year of their Stick Tap for Service initiative.
  • WBD Sports’ NHL on TNT and B/R Open Ice will be giving away a special edition hot sauce called Hot as Puck, which is also available for free online. The media outfit will also host a live on-site performance by country artist Sam Hunt.
  • Truly Hard Seltzer's activation at the NHL Winter Classic Plaza includes Bubble Hockey Games, an interactive photo booth and rooftop views.
  • MassMutual released a video interview with Bruins D Charlie McAvoy and his father about his path to the NHL for distribution on TV and social platforms.
