The ACC was officially welcomed to Charlotte last night at a reception in uptown Charlotte, as the city’s leaders welcomed ACC Commissioner JIM PHILLIPS, school presidents and ADs who are in town for conference meetings. The ACC announced last month it is moving its headquarters from Greensboro to uptown Charlotte over the next year. Among those speaking to welcome the ACC were Charlotte Mayor VI LYLES, Mecklenburg County Chair GEORGE DUNLAP, Bank of America President KEITH COCKRELL, Lowe’s Chair & President MARVIN ELLISON, Quail Hollow President JOHNNY HARRIS, Lincoln Harris President JOHN HARRIS, CRBA President JANET LABER, Foundation For The Carolinas President MICHAEL MARSICAO, Charlotte Sports Foundation’s DANNY MORRISON, CRBA’s TOM MURRAY, Spangler Chair ANNA SPANGLER NELSON, and Charlotte Center City Partners President & CEO MICHAEL SMITH. Final remarks were given by Phillips, and Duke President VINCENT PRICE who was a leader in the search (SBJ).

SPEECH AID: A WALL STREET JOURNAL piece on public speaking noted Mavericks CEO CYNT MARSHALL was "immediately struck by her constant walking around the stage” when she "reviewed video of herself giving speeches." Marshall said, “I’m driving myself crazy.” Marshall now "pauses in the left, middle and right of the stage for several minutes each, choosing one person in each section to make eye contact with." Marshall whether "addressing a crowd of 30,000 for a college graduation or teaching a corporate group about diversity and inclusion" keeps her presentations "interactive, instructing students to repeat advice back to her or inviting workers on stage to dance the Cupid Shuffle." For "big speeches," she "will practice five to 10 times aloud, ideally once or twice a day for the week prior" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/17).

NAMES: The home of late Dodgers broadcaster VIN SCULLY is now on sale for $15M. Scully paid $12.4M in "cash for the compound back in 2009." This listing arrives two months after he died in August. The house is “quite a drive to Dodger Stadium -- roughly 30 miles.” The property includes a “11,000-square-foot mansion, guest apartment and guesthouse surrounded by amenities such as a swimming pool, spa, tennis court and putting green.” Seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms “complete the main house,” including a "primary suite with a balcony overlooking the landscaped grounds" (L.A. TIMES, 10/17)....WNBA Phoenix Mercury G SKYLAR DIGGINS-SMITH announced she is pregnant. Diggins-Smith gave birth to her first child in 2019 (THE ATHLETIC, 10.17).
