Earnhardt hesitant on Cup ownership over NASCAR financial structure

Earnhardt said he was told by the RTA that owning a team currently was a losing propositionGetty Images

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he is a "potential owner" in NASCAR's Cup series via his JR Motorsports, but what he has heard about the price of charters in the series has made him "pause." Earnhardt said JR Motorsports is "actively out here” speaking with other NASCAR teams “about what these charters are worth, who’s willing to sell one, how do we become an owner.” But the Race Team Alliance is "basically telling me that this charter that I want to buy is a losing proposition, or not money-making, it’s broken. I don’t want to buy this charter now because it’s not a successful business venture.” The RTA “basically said they’re all losing money.” As a potential buyer of a charter, what NASCAR "would give them” from the new media-rights deal “would be way more.” The teams need the TV money so they “aren’t solely responsible to depend on the sponsorships to race." But Earnhardt said he did not think there would ever be a “work stoppage” over these issues, so “I don’t know how much leverage the RTA really has.” If they “don’t have a lot of leverage, then how do they get the number they want?” (“The Dale Jr. Download,” DIRTYMOMEDIA.com, 10/11).
