MLB Rangers expected to raise payroll again in hope of competing

This season's Rangers had a payroll of just over $160M, and the team finished out of the postseason againGetty Images

Texas Rangers GM Chris Young believes the team is “expected to compete in 2023” after finishing this year 68-94 and alluded that owner Ray Davis has “agreed to increase payroll again,” according to Evan Grant of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Young said, “He is fully committed to providing the resources necessary for us to build a winning team.” The Rangers had a payroll around $161M this season and Grant noted that if the team is not willing “to push to $200 million or higher, the current playoff field says they are just wasting Davis’ money.” The Rangers “have a lot of gears turning in the right direction,” including a highly-ranked farm system and “some core veterans” locked up. The club “closed the spending gap some this past season,” and due to Globe Life Park “and its environs, they should have the ability to do more.” Grant: “The combination gives them the ability to create and sustain a long-term championship window. ... Anything less at this point is essentially a half-measure” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/11).
