Former All-Star Posey joining Giants ownership to stay connected to team

Former Giants C Buster Posey is buying into the team and will serve on its BOD, a move that allows him to have a “tangible connection” to the organization “without a defined structure,” according to Tyler Kepner of the N.Y. TIMES. Posey wanted something “more substantial than the typical ex-player roles -- glad-handing sponsors, helping in spring training, calling a few games on television.” He said, “This will be a fun role for me to be in. But by no means do I want this to be misconstrued that I’m taking on any type of front office role. I think there’s a natural tendency for fans to maybe think that I’ll have this prominent role, and that’s not going to be the case.” Kepner notes Posey can be a “powerful recruiting voice for potential free agents.” Additionally, Posey indicated that he and Giants Chair Greg Johnson are friends that “trade ideas about issues facing the franchise.” The new role “will amplify Posey’s influence.” Johnson: “All of the board of directors were comfortable bringing him on to the board and taking a really active role in every aspect of the team. That’s really what he wanted. He said, ‘I don’t want this to look good in a press release and then nobody hears from Buster again’” (N.Y. TIMES, 9/21). In San Jose, Michael Nowels notes the 35-year-old Posey will be the "youngest member of the Giants’ board of directors" and will be the "first former Giants player to join the team as an owner" (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 9/21).
