Media Notes

In N.Y., Andrew Marchand notes ESPN’s new “NBA Countdown” had the "backdrop of the Knicks warming up" on Wednesday, giving it a "slightly awkward, but a big game feel." The first show "centered around" Stephen A. Smith. That is "unsurprising," as the show will "probably go as far as viewers want more Smith." The "floor for the program is high," as it features "experienced media personalities." So the show "will have a certain level." As for its ceiling, it is "hard to see it being near TNT’s iconic 'Inside the NBA,'" ESPN’s "perpetual studio nemesis." It is "hard to make something new and special; especially when the same personalities are on-air daily" (N.Y. POST, 10/22).

OFFSEASON PROGRAMMING: In Chicago, Jeff Agrest notes Marquee Sports Network announced its Cubs programming plans for the offseason, which includes "new shows, a new documentary and new classic games." “Cubs 360” will "air weekly starting in November, covering offseason news." It will provide "on-site coverage of the winter meetings in December in Orlando." The net also will "present a documentary on Billy Williams that will debut in the winter." Roundtable show “Icons of the Ivy” returns with a "series involving players from the 2007-08 Cubs." Marquee is "discussing more shows, possibly involving the 1984 and ’89 teams" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 10/22).
