New Whoop Wearable Tracks Skin Temperature, Oxygen Levels

Whoop unveiled its latest generation wearable, version 4.0, which for the first time will include new metrics, a health monitor dashboard, and the ability to be worn on new body parts. The revamped hardware is now 33% smaller, equipped with more LED sensors and photodiodes, and is compatible with a waterproof battery charging pack.

The 4.0 iteration, available for free to all Whoop members with at least a six-month subscription commitment, adds two new biometrics. Oxygen saturation and skin temperature will form the basis of the health monitor along with preexisting data points such as resting heart rate, heart rate variability and respiratory rate.

The company also launched Whoop Body, a new line of compression clothes with built-in pods where a Whoop device can be placed for data collection without the need for a wrist strap. Whoop’s launch event included a presentation from its cofounder and CEO Will Ahmed alongside cameos from several famous athlete users: Olympians Michael Phelps, Nelly Korda, Gabby Thomas, and Tom Daley.

“The health monitor is potentially the most important feature in 4.0,” Ahmed said. “This is our first major step in developing a system to give you easy access to key health metrics all in one place.”

In recent weeks, Whoop announced another $200 million investment for a $3.6 billion valuation; it acquired weightlifting wearable PUSH; and it incorporated drivers’ Whoop Live data in a NASCAR broadcast, as the racing circuit joined the PGA Tour as another major pro sports to televise the biometric data.

SportTechie honored Whoop as its 2020 Outstanding Technology of the Year and discovered its utility in monitoring the strain of parenting.
