League Notes

THE ATHLETIC's Lindsay Jones wrote it is "beyond time" for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to "use his sweeping disciplinary power to remove Deshaun Watson from the Texans’ active roster." For nearly six months, Goodell and the NFL have "tried to apply precedent to an unprecedented situation." The result is that "everyone, from Watson, to the Texans, to other teams rumored to be interested in acquiring the star quarterback, to Goodell himself, looks bad." Goodell has "rarely been conservative in using his disciplinary power before," so this is "an odd time to remain so judicious" (THEATHLETIC.com, 9/1).

BURYING THE LEDE? GOLFWEEK's Adam Schupak wrote at a time when "many believe golf has distance and pace of play problems, two of the more pressing matters [PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan could’ve highlighted during his press conference," he instead chose something that is "small potatoes in comparison" with his focus on fan behavior. It was "actually a shrewd maneuver on his part" as it deflected away from "bigger concerns (the upstart renegade leagues that won’t go away and continue to be a nuisance) and made him look as if he's protecting his players from an onslaught of unruly behavior" (GOLFWEEK.com, 9/1).

USSF'S CONE RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION: In L.A., Kevin Baxter noted Cindy Parlow Cone, who was appointed USSF President after the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro in March '20, said that she will "run for re-election to a full four-year term in March." Parlow Cone ran unopposed last February to "serve out the final year of Cordeiro’s vacated term" (L.A. TIMES, 8/31).
