Indian Premier League Cricket Suspended Amid Surge of COVID-19 Cases

The 2021 Indian Premier League cricket tournament has been suspended indefinitely, following news that several players and staff tested positive for COVID-19 while the country surpassed 20 million cases. The announcement comes after an emergency meeting between the IPL Governing Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India that resulted in an unanimous decision to postpone the season.

The suspension has made it unclear how some international players will return home, as some countries have imposed restrictions on travelers coming from India. Last year, the season was postponed until September due to the pandemic. In 2021, the IPL has thus far held 29 games without fans since April 9.
