Quarantine Chaperones and Empty Stadiums

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored his record-breaking 21st goal of the season on Sunday as Bayern defeated SC Freiburg, 2-1. He is the first Bundesliga player to score 21 goals in his team’s first 16 matches of a season.

The milestone was reached without fans present, and German Football League CEO Christian Seifert expects Bundesliga games to continue without fans for the remainder of the season due to COVID-19. The Bundesliga allowed fans at 20% capacity in September and October, but that trial was not extended amid rising infections. All major European soccer leagues are currently playing without fans. Juventus defeated Napoli, 2-0, to win the Italian Super Cup on Wednesday. The tournament, sponsored by PlayStation, is held annually between the Coppa Italia winners and Serie A champions. Juventus celebrated its victory without fans as Wednesday’s match was played in an empty Mapei Stadium due to the coronavirus pandemic. The past two Super Cups were held in Saudi Arabia.
