Jaguars Appear To Be Closing In On Urban Meyer As New Coach

The Jaguars and Urban Meyer are engaged in "advanced talks to see whether they can finalize a deal" for him to become the team's new coach, according to a source cited by Adam Schefter of ESPN. Sources said that Meyer who is scheduled to meet with the Jags today for the second straight day, is "highly interested in the possibility of coaching in the NFL." The source added that the situation is "'trending' toward a deal being completed." Sources said that there has been "regular communication and interaction between the two sides" (ESPN.com, 1/14). Schefter said the Jaguars currently are the “most attractive job opening in the NFL” because the team has 11 picks, including the No. 1 overall pick, in this year’s NFL Draft and have over $100M in salary cap space. Schefter noted Jaguars Owner Shad Khan, “as a minority, wants to be entirely respectful of the process” and has interviewed other coaching candidates, but he is in “advanced talks” with Meyer (“Get Up,” ESPN, 1/14). In Jacksonville, John Reid notes Meyer from the outset has been the Jaguars' "top target to replace Doug Marrone." If a deal is "not reached within the next 30 hours," the Jaguars "could wait until late next week after this Monday's Martin Luther King Day holiday and Wednesday's presidential inauguration before finalizing an agreement" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 1/14).
