Complaint Against Cohen Paints Different Picture Of Mets Owner

Steve Cohen's Point72 Asset Management hedge fund received a gender discrimination complaintGETTY IMAGES

A "recently unsealed gender discrimination complaint filed by a former top manager" for STEVE COHEN's Point72 Asset Management hedge fund "offers a glimpse into his volatile temper and what some women have said is an openly sexist and hostile culture," according to Matthew Goldstein of the N.Y. TIMES. In the months since Cohen became owner of the Mets, he has been "affable and accessible," and has "become something of a fan favorite on Twitter." SARA VAVRA’s complaint was "filed last summer." Ultimately, Point72 "did fire her, in October 2019, prompting her to file her discrimination complaint with the Connecticut commission." In the lead-up to MLB owners approving Cohen’s $2.4B bid to purchase the Mets, there was "concern whether a series of allegations of sexist behavior at Point72 might derail the deal" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/6). Meanwhile, in N.Y., Thornton McEnery cites an investor who indicated that Point72 Asset Management "returned double digit gains of around 17 percent in 2020." McEnery writes Cohen’s "personal take on that haul is expected to be in the range" of $1.6B. The pay raise "couldn’t come at a better time," as Cohen has "vowed to spend big on the Mets." And fans are "expected to try to keep him to that promise" (N.Y. POST, 1/6).
