Trey Wingo Charts New Path Forward With Football Podcast

Wingo worked at ESPN for 23 years before the network opted not to re-sign him in SeptemberESPN IMAGES

Former ESPN host Trey Wingo on Wednesday "debuted a new football-oriented podcast, 'Trey Wingo Presents: Half-Forgotten History,'" according to Richard Deitsch of THE ATHLETIC. Wingo explained the podcast's purpose: "The premise of the show is I got a chance to sit next to some of the greatest people in NFL history for a long time and chopped it up with them. Most of the most interesting conversations came away from the camera." He added, "The whole premise is let’s bring everybody behind the curtain." Wingo said State Farm, McDonald’s and Maker’s Mark "stepped up for sponsorship of the first season." Meanwhile, Wingo addressed his 23 years with ESPN after management opted not to re-sign him. He said, "When I agreed to do the ["Golic & Wingo" show] I said, 'OK, I’ll do this for three years and see how it works out.' I knew fairly soon that this clearly wasn’t what I wanted to do long term." He continued, "So my agent and I went to them (management) in May 2019, which is about halfway through the contract. We said we just want to be as open and honest with you as we can. This is probably not something that I want to do again going forward." Wingo said he "tried to be as open and honest with them as possible, starting in May 2019." But, he concluded, "I guess in retrospect, that might have been the worst decision I could have made (THEATHLETIC.com, 12/3).
