NFL Week 12 Report: Tony Romo Gets Grief For Defense Of Tom Brady

Romo several times during Sunday's game blamed other players/coaches when Brady seemed to misfireGETTY IMAGES

CBS’ Tony Romo was on the call for the Buccaneers’ loss to the Chiefs yesterday, and NFL commentators on Twitter were “picking apart some of the arguments” the normally well-regarded Romo made about Bucs QB Tom Brady, “specifically his comments that Mike Evans was responsible for an incompletion even though Brady threw a bad ball,” according to Tzvi Machlin of THESPUN.com. Fox’ Nick Wright was “particularly peeved,” feeling that Romo was “crediting every good play to Brady and every bad play to receivers.” Wright tweeted, “3 hours of explanations of how nothing is ever actually Tom Brady’s fault, even the obviously terrible throws!” But there was “mixed reaction,” as ESPN’s Ed Werder tweeted, “Romo with some educational insights into the problems Tom Brady has with Bruce Arians offense” (THESPUN.com, 11/29). ESPN’s Ryan Clark tweeted satirically, “Dear current DBs I am sorry. I clearly don’t do my job correctly. I will now (as a former DB) look for every way to explain your mistakes as someone else’s fault. Former QBs do this so well and I apologize for not having y’all back” (TWITTER.com, 11/29).

BURKHARDT GETTING COMFORTABLE: In Boston, Chad Finn wrote Fox' Kevin Burkhardt is "authentically good-natured on the air and off." His rise to "national prominence as a broadcaster was not a meteoric one." Burkhardt said that it has "been a pleasure" working with Daryl Johnston in their first season together. But he "acknowledges that they would have benefited even further from being able to spend some time together away from the broadcast booth." Burkhardt: "It’s obviously tougher to build that necessary rapport this year. We talked on the phone and we Zoom and stuff like that, but it’s just not the same. ... There’s no replacement for going out and having a bottle of wine and just shooting the breeze” (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/29).

BRANDT PRAISED: In N.Y., Bob Raissman named NFL Network's Kyle Brandt his "Dude Of The Week." Brandt's "enterprising commentary on the NFL Network’s Good Morning Football show has been fearless and bold." For instance, Brandt last week "took Tom Brady to task for leaving the field Monday night without shaking Rams QB Jared Goff’s hand" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/29).

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY: Bengals radio play-by-play voice Dan Hoard missed yesterday's game against the Giants after being "on the shelf due to contact tracing." Mike Watts, who calls Bengals preseason games, filled in for Hoard (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 11/30).
