England to Permit 4,000 Fans at Sporting Events in December

Sports fans in England will soon be allowed back into stadiums for the first time since March, as U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new COVID-19 measures on Monday. The new guidelines will go into effect on Dec. 2, ending the national lockdown that’s been in effect since Nov. 5.

England will be separated into three tiers according to the risk of coronavirus. Tier-one areas will permit up to 4,000 fans at outdoor venues and tier-two areas will admit as many as 2,000 fans. No fans will be allowed at tier-three venues.

No venues will be permitted to exceed 50% capacity. The new restrictions mean that fans will soon attend Premier League matches for the first time since the virus suspended the soccer league’s season in March. British spectator sports impacted by the loss of fans were recently awarded $400 million in pandemic relief by the U.K. government.
