Relocated Hoops Tourney Now In South Dakota COVID Hotspot

The pandemic forced the Battle 4 Atlantis college hoops tournament to be relocated from the Bahamas to South Dakota's Sanford Sports Complex, but officials happened to "pick a part of the country with one of the worst Covid-19 outbreaks anywhere in the world," according to Cohen & Radnofsky of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The coronavirus is "ripping across South Dakota with ferocity right now." Nowhere in the state is there "more virus than Minnehaha County." That is where organizers of the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls "believe they have taken enough precautions to welcome a dozen men’s and women’s college basketball teams from 10 states next week." The tournament is also "planning to allow crowds of roughly 850 people, or 25% of the arena’s capacity, even as other states with much lower rates of infection limit indoor gatherings to a handful of people." Organizers said that the tournament will "emulate the NBA’s bubble for the teams and they are betting that frequent testing, stringent health protocols and limited contact with the surrounding community will minimize risk" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/17).
