White Sox Sign Radio Deal With ESPN 1000 Chicago

The White Sox signed a multiyear agreement with ESPN Radio 1000 Chicago, naming them the team’s "flagship radio station," according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. White Sox games "will air on ESPN 1000, the team’s fourth radio home" since '15, beginning with the team’s first game of the '21 Cactus League season on Feb. 27. The agreement includes all White Sox "regular season and postseason games, as well as select spring training games." The White Sox have "bounced around on radio" after WSCR-AM's contract with the team expired after the '15 season. WLS-AM was to be the new White Sox flagship station from '16 through '21, but WLS Owner Cumulus Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November '17 and "entered into a restructuring agreement." The Bankruptcy Court "permitted Cumulus and WLS to end the agreement" with the White Sox, and WGN-AM became the flagship in February '18. The ESPN announcement was "expected to be made Tuesday but was delayed after news broke the night before that newly hired manager Tony La Russa had been arrested on DUI charges in February" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 11/13). Meanwhile, the White Sox confirmed that WGN radio play-by-by announcer Andy Masur is "a candidate to return" while longtime analyst Darrin Jackson "will be back"(CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/13).
