BYU Athletics Comms Shakeup Includes Layoffs To Media Relations

BYU is undergoing a "restructuring of its athletic communications department," including an "unspecified number of layoffs among its media relations personnel," according to Brandon Judd of the DESERET NEWS. Part of that restructuring involves "creating hybrid communications positions that emphasize social media" in addition to "retaining traditional media relations responsibilities." The school’s athletic department also announced the hiring of Jon McBride as Associate AD/Communications & Media Strategy (DESERET NEWS, 11/10).

FURLOUGHS FOR CHARLOTTE: In Charlotte, Rick Bonnell in a front-page piece notes UNC Charlotte is requiring any athletic department employee "making more than $50,000 annually" to "take 10 days of unpaid leave between now and June 30." That "covers 48 positions and will include football coach Will Healy and men’s basketball coach Ron Sanchez." The furloughs come as a "cost-cutting move" amid the pandemic, as the school has "already lost about" $4.5M in revenue (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/11).
