76ers Unveil City Edition Uniform Inspired By Iverson-Era Jerseys

Jersey design is meant to mimic Philadelphia's famous Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River76ERS

The 76ers' new City Edition jersey for the '20-21 season is black with a line of houses "wrapping around the front and back of the tops ... meant to mimic Philadelphia's famous Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River," according to Zach Lowe of ESPN.com. 76ers President Chris Heck and VP/Business & Fan Development Desron Dorset indicated that the team "wanted to highlight some local landmark that takes on a new life at night." The team "discussed a mirror image throwback" to their black jerseys from the Allen Iverson era, though it "went another direction for a variety of reasons, including a determination to maintain some of the team's core color scheme." Mixing in four colors -- red, white, blue and black -- is a "juggling act, even if the dominant one (black) relegates the others to trim status." The first proposal to "gain serious traction focused on blue and black, with red appearing only in the 76 logo at the bottom of the shorts or not at all." Those jerseys, though, "echoed Duke University's black alternates -- too closely" for 76ers G Ben Simmons's taste, who had a role in the design. Red is among Simmons' "favorite colors" and he also "did not much like the blue 'Phila' wordmark in that titled script." Meanwhile, the 76ers will build an accompanying court, though that is a "challenge for them, since there is not space to store it at the Wells Fargo Center." The team instead "will store the court off-site" (ESPN.com, 11/10).

KINGS' HIGHWAY: In Sacramento, Jason Anderson reports the Kings' new City Edition uniform combines colors that have been "woven through the franchise's 35-year history" in the city. The uniform features a "black base with baby blue and red trim and the word 'Sactown' emblazoned on the front of the jersey." The design includes a "black and gray checkered pattern on the sides of the jersey and shorts, the words 'Sacramento Proud' above the label at the bottom of the jersey and the team's lion emblem on the shorts." The Kings also announced that they have "collaborated with local apparel company Swish Authentics to create a complementary merchandise line" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 11/10).

MAGIC REAPPEARING ACT: In Orlando, Roy Parry reports the new Magic jerseys “showcase the history of Orlando.” Orange is used to “symbolize sunshine and citrus,” and this latest jersey “connects the orange roots of Orlando and the Magic’s original classic pinstripes, a hallmark of Magic uniforms that date back to the inaugural team in 1989” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/10).
