Olympic Sports Using Bubbles To Protect Seasons, '21 Games

Bubbles created for Olympic sports are built on same concept as those of NBA, NHL and MLSGETTY IMAGES

Some prominent Olympic sports around the world are "building their own version of the model that saved" some professional sports in the U.S.: "the bubble," according to Radnofsky & Higgins of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The bubbles created for gymnastics, swimming, speed skating and figure skating are "not exactly the campuses created in Florida and Utah and Canada for basketball, soccer and hockey." These are "smaller, short-term efforts, relatively quick to set up and easy to dismantle." But they are "built on the same concept" -- that a "closed network of highly tested and vigilant athletes might still be able to compete against each other." If it "goes well," they may be "dropping clues for how the greatest prize for participants, the Olympics, could still happen in Tokyo next summer." In Japan, the Int'l Gymnastics Federation is "backing an event called 'the Friendship and Solidarity Competition,'" billed as a test for the postponed Tokyo Games' "ability to go ahead" in the summer of '21. In Budapest, hundreds of the world’s top swimmers are "gathering for six weeks for the second season of the International Swim League," with "437 athletes and coaches taking up residence in the Thermal and Grand Hotels on Margaret Island." The ISL "required all bubble occupants to receive two negative test results within 72 hours" of arriving in Hungary and, once there, "quarantine in their hotel room until receipt of a third negative PCR result" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/8).
