Election Day Sees Three States Approve Sports Betting

Maryland, Louisiana and South Dakota are all set to legalize sports gambling after their voters passed measures on Tuesday’s Election Day ballots. The results mean that 26 states (including Washington D.C.) now have legal sports betting.

While the three states will all likely begin sports betting in 2021, they will first be required to pass further legislation, such as whether online betting will be permitted, tax rates, and how many operators will be allowed to launch in their respective states.

Hawaii, Ohio and Massachusetts currently have active legislation relating to sports betting. In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down PASPA, a 26-year-old federal act on sports gambling that banned it everywhere outside of Nevada, thus giving individual states the rights to pass their own sports betting legislation.
