Sources: Astros Inform Full-Timers Of Impending Layoffs, Furloughs

The Astros informed their full-time employees of "impending layoffs and furloughs," according to sources cited by Chandler Rome of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. Employees were informed during a staff meeting yesterday, and individuals who were affected were "subsequently notified by phone throughout the day." A source said that there were "more furloughs than layoffs." Attrition impacted "every department within the Astros organization -- baseball, business operations and the Astros' two owned minor league affiliates at Corpus Christi and Fayetteville." Those impacted "will keep their healthcare and benefits." Though some employees took pay cuts earlier this year, the team "avoided layoffs and furloughs throughout the beginning of the pandemic when the sport was shut down." The team was "able to retain its entire business and baseball operations staff through Oct. 31" (HOUSTON CHRONCILE, 10/28).

CUTTING BACK: In Cleveland, Paul Hoynes notes the Indians within the last two weeks "have had to lay off team personnel as the organization tries to adjust" to financial losses. The Indians' recent layoffs "have come from across the baseball operations department," and some are "due to contraction of teams in the minors." The Indians are "working with those leaving the organization to help them find another job in baseball or move to another industry" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 10/28).
