NBA Targeting Dec. 22 Start Date, 72-Game Regular Season

The NBA is targeting Dec. 22 as the start date of its 2020-21 season, according to The Athletic. The league is reportedly aiming to play a 72-game regular season, 10 games fewer than its normal 82-game schedule.

The NBA wants to end its season before the start of the 2021 Summer Olympics, which are scheduled to begin July 23 in Tokyo. As trialed during last season’s Orlando restart, the NBA wants to keep its play-in tournament for determining the No. 8 seed teams that make the playoffs.

Rather than continue playing in a bubble environment, the NBA prefers to have its teams play in local markets for the upcoming season. According to The Athletic, arenas that welcome fans could require those in courtside seats to be tested for the coronavirus.
