COVID-19 Insurance Covers Athlete Medical Expenses for NCAA Schools

Sports accident insurance company A-G Administrators is offering a COVID-19 insurance plan to NCAA programs. Schools have until Nov. 20 to enroll in the health plan, which covers medical expenses for NCAA-member institutions in case their student-athletes are hospitalized for COVID-19.

According to ESPN, athletic directors and conference commissioners have expressed interest in enrolling in the plan. For $65 per athlete, schools can purchase coverage for individual COVID-19-related medical expenses up to $150,000. For $85 per athlete, the coverage is raised to $250,000. The policy comes with a $5,000 deductible and a death benefit of $10,000.

In August, the NCAA passed a rule requiring all schools competing during the pandemic to cover COVID-19-related medical expenses for their athletes. So far this season, more than 30 D-1 college football games have been postponed or canceled due to the virus, with numerous teams sustaining outbreaks.

Last month, 20-year-old Jamain Stephens Jr., a senior defensive tackle at California University of Pennsylvania, died from a blood clot in his heart after he contracted COVID-19. In the NFL, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead has been hospitalized twice due to complications from the virus.
