MLB's Ownership Committee Approves Cohen's Mets Purchase

Steve Cohen still must receive approval on the Mets from MLB's Executive CouncilGETTY IMAGES

Steve Cohen's purchase of the Mets took "another step toward completion when his deal was approved" by MLB's Ownership Committee, one of the smaller groups that "needed to give the hedge-fund multibillionaire a thumbs-up before he officially takes over," according to a source cited by Tim Healey of NEWSDAY. This was "not the final vote," as the ownership committee is a "subset of major-league owners that reviews the granular details of the transaction before it is presented to the whole group." Another one of those smaller groups -- the Executive Council -- "will review Cohen and his pact next." Then comes the "last hurdle: a full vote of all team owners," which is "expected to happen at any point after the World Series." In the meantime, the Mets are in "limbo, waiting for the boss -- bosses -- to arrive officially," including Sandy Alderson, who "will return to the organization as team president." The fate of Exec VP & GM Brodie Van Wagenen and others is "uncertain" (NEWSDAY, 10/21). In N.Y., Madden & Thosar note the MLB Ownership Committee "voted 7-1 in favor" of Cohen, with the lone no vote coming from White Sox Owner Jerry Reinsdorf (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/21). Also In N.Y., Sherman & Martin note Reinsdorf had "previously opposed Cohen’s pursuit of the Dodgers." But the chance of the deal "falling through is less likely" after yesterday's vote (N.Y. POST, 10/21).
