MLS Forms Diversity Committee to Support Social Justice

Major League Soccer has formed a diversity committee to create programs that address racism and social injustice in society and soccer. Members of the MLS Diversity Committee will include MLS commissioner Don Garber, club owners, and Black Players For Change, a group of more than 100 Black MLS players.

Additionally, MLS owners have agreed to contribute $1 million to Black Players For Change to aid in the growth of the organization. The new committee has launched a supplier diversity program to support minority-owned businesses, which will include hiring them to work at league events.

MLS will also develop initiatives that provide clearly defined career paths for those from underrepresented groups. The league also plans to diversify youth soccer at the grassroots level. MLS Next, the league’s developmental soccer academy, will increase representation among players, coaches and referees with people from underserved backgrounds.
