Champions Hockey League Cancels Season Due to Pandemic

Europe’s Champions Hockey League has canceled its 2020-21 season due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The CHL said it was forced to make the decision as the “general situation in Europe has not improved,” amid the continent’s current second wave of coronavirus cases.

The CHL hosts a tournament for Europe’s top 32 ice hockey teams from 12 countries, and cited travel restrictions between participating countries as a reason for canceling. In April, the CHL announced plans to postpone the start of its tournament by one month, targeting an Oct. 6 start date.

“With the current development of the epidemiological situation we unfortunately would not be able to guarantee that everyone always returns home in good health,” CHL president Peter Zahner said on Tuesday. He added that the CHL plans to return for its 2021-22 season.
