Raiders Honor Al Davis By Lighting Memorial Torch At HQ

The Raiders on Thursday night marked the nine-year anniversary of the death of former Owner Al Davis by "lighting the original torch created in his honor" that "sits in front of the team’s headquarters" in Henderson, according to Mick Akers of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. Raiders President Marc Badain was chosen by Owner Mark Davis to light the torch because he "played a vital role in seeing Al Davis’ dream of building a stadium for the Silver and Black come to fruition." The flame "will stay lit at all times," representing an "eternal flame burning in Davis’ honor" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/10). Meanwhile, THE ATHLETIC's Bill Shea noted the "new carbon fiber and aluminum version" at Allegiant Stadium, known officially as the Al Davis Memorial Torch, "stands nine stories high, with LED-illuminated flame effects, and is said to be the largest 3D-printed object in the world." Mark Davis along with the stadium’s chief designer, K.C.-based Manica Architecture, worked with Dimensional Innovations, a Kansas-based firm that "specializes in unique design and fabrication for commercial and sports work." Dimensional Innovations made a "significant capital investment to land and create the project," and for "future work likely to require special machinery." Dimensional Innovations Sports Practice Dir Justin Wood said that the original plan called for "lights and fog to create the flame effect," but that was "eventually dropped in favor of LED lighting" (THEATHLETIC.com, 10/9).
