Senators Go Back To The Future With New Jersey Designs

The Senators “unveiled the new home and away jerseys they’ll wear this season” last night during the NHL Draft, and they are similar to what the team wore from ’92-’07, according to Bruce Garrioch of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. Senators President of Business Operations Anthony LeBlanc “has spent a lot of time working on a rebrand” since joining the franchise in March. The club announced the “return to the 2D logo last month and the uniform was the next step in that program.” LeBlanc: “Prior to joining the team, I was a long-time fan and we all loved that original logo with the 2D and how it looks. The players love it. Everyone is excited to have the classic look back.” Garrioch reports Senators Owner Eugene Melnyk and his youngest daughter, Olivia, “were involved in the process of changing the jerseys back to the ones the club last wore when it went to the Stanley Cup final in 2007.” There will not be a “third jersey this season," but the club’s marketing team is "working on the possibility of bringing one back in 2021-22” (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 10/7).

WORTH A SHOT: In Ottawa, Ken Warren discusses the jerseys and writes, "What’s old is new again." However, he adds, "If those changes help spark renewed interest in the organization from a new or lost generation, it’s definitely worth a shot." Being bolder and making the "retro, old-school, barberpoled, stylized 'O' part of the main logo might have sent a louder message to a wider audience, but any kind of different look is good for a team trying to turn the page" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 10/7).
