IndyCar Delaying Hybrid Engine To '23 Buys Time To Eye New OEM

IndyCar's "multiyear extensions with both Chevy and Honda, along with the delay of the series' move to hybrid power until 2023, lays the groundwork for stability," according to Nathan Brown of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. IndyCar President Jay Frye said, "We know where we're going and what we're doing, and we've got [a] good partners lineup. I'm excited about the future." IndyCar in '18 announced a jump to a new engine for '21, but a year ago "bumped that back to account for the addition of a hybrid component." Frye said that another delay "may be necessary to allow suppliers and their own partners the proper time to make the jump." Honda Performance Development President Ted Klaus, General Motors President Mark Reuss, Frye and IndyCar said that it was important for them to be "united to take this next major step for the series as the Roger Penske era begins to unfold." They added that that their partnership "has room for another seat at the table" in terms of a third OEM to join Honda and Chevy. Reuss: "It's absolutely needed, and I think it would be fabulous, whatever manufacturer that may be." This news allows someone like Ferrari an "additional year to mull things over" (INDIANAPOIS STAR, 10/4). RACER.com's Marshall Pruett reported the delay to '23 was "due to manufacturing and supply constraints caused by COVID-19" (RACER.com, 10/3).
