Sports Owners Donate Far More To Republicans, Analysis Says

The political donations made by sports owners have, in many cases, "put them in direct opposition with their players’ social justice efforts," according to Armour & Schad of USA TODAY. Political contributions of 183 owners from 161 teams show that owners have "collectively given at least" $14.6M to federal candidates during the '19-20 election cycle so far -- with "nearly 86% of those funds going to Republican candidates and causes." Owners have directed more than $3.7M to "political action committees directly aligned with" President Trump. Meanwhile, owners have given a combined $1.35M to "Democratic candidates and causes during this election cycle, including roughly $334,000" to presidential nominee Joe Biden. And while "more owners have given directly to Biden than to Trump," donations "generally have been in much smaller amounts." Owners also have "donated $718,965 to industry- or issue-based PACs, including those operated by the NFL and MLB." Fifty-five of the 183 owners "haven't given any money to federal candidates so far during this election cycle." Roughly 89% of the $3.8M donated by NFL owners since '19 has "gone to Republicans" (USA TODAY, 10/2).
