West Coast Wildfires Postpone MLB Game in Seattle, Shorten LPGA Event in Portland

Poor air quality caused by ongoing wildfires ravaging the western U.S. caused Major League Baseball to postpone yesterday’s game between the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants in Seattle.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the game is being rescheduled to be played in San Francisco. Seattle’s air quality index reached 220 yesterday, which is considered very unhealthy according to AirNow, a website run by the U.S. government. The air quality in San Francisco reached 57 yesterday, which is considered moderate.

The LPGA also announced yesterday that the Portland Classic will be shortened to 54 holes (instead of 72) due to the poor air quality caused by the fires. The tournament, which was already being held without fans due to the coronavirus, will not start on Thursday and will instead be played Friday through Sunday.

“Our meteorologist says that it is unlikely that air-quality conditions will improve before midday Thursday, and we cannot risk the health of our players, staff, volunteers, broadcast crew and others at the golf course,” Heather Daly-Donofrio, the LPGA’s chief tour operations officer, said in a statement.
