Univ. Of Utah Athletic Furloughs To Include AD, All Coaches

The Univ. of Utah is implementing a full athletics department-wide furlough that will include AD Mark Harlan and extend "on down through his department," according to Josh Newman of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Both football coach Kyle Whittingham and men's basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak, who each make more than $3M annually, also will be included. Harlan during an appearance Friday on ESPN Radio 700 Salt Lake City indicated that there "have been job eliminations inside the athletic department, but did not specify who or how many." Newman reports the furloughs "will be a minimum of one week up to a maximum of eight weeks." Harlan, his senior staff and all head coaches "will take two-week furloughs, but the department will be fully operational the entire time." Utah has projected a $50-60M loss without football, but that projection "would be mitigated if the Pac-12 winds up playing football this winter or spring" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 9/5). Harlan said, "We've collectively thought as a group if we could all do this together it would minimize. We've had to lay off some folks in terms of job eliminations and that's been really hard" (DESERET NEWS, 9/5).
