StubHub Facing Litany Of Lawsuits Amid Outrage Over Policy Change

StubHub users are "taking to social media to voice their outrage" over the company's change to its FanProtect Guarantee policy, and now there are are "at least six class-action lawsuits filed against StubHub and at least one lawsuit" brought against MLB, a partner of the ticketing outfit, according to Jason Lloyd of THE ATHLETIC. As live sporting events began getting canceled amid the pandemic, StubHub "initially stood behind its FanProtect Guarantee, which assured customers who had already bought tickets that they could receive a full refund or a credit toward future purchases." But as more and more events were canceled and the pandemic took hold in the U.S., StubHub "abruptly changed its policy in late March." No longer was it "offering full refunds, only a 120 percent credit toward future purchases that must be used by Dec. 31, 2021." The pivot "enraged customers who weren't interested in credits and instead wanted their money back, particularly since there still is no timeline for when many live events may resume and limited or no fan attendance at most of the events that have resumed." Detroit-based Liddle & Dubin attorney Nick Coulson "estimates he has heard from thousands of StubHub customers who have been denied refunds during the pandemic." Eric Fuller, a former class-action litigator who now is a ticket analyst and consultant to the entertainment industry, believes StubHub "will eventually have to file bankruptcy" (THEATHLETIC.com, 9/2).
