Impact, Toronto FC Differed In Opinion On Playing Friday Match

There was "a divide -- and likely dissension -- between" the Impact and Toronto FC about whether to hold their match Friday, according to Herb Zurkowsky of the MONTREAL GAZETTE. The Impact "didn’t want to proceed." Toronto FC "did, except, it seems," for F Jozy Altidore, who "apparently missed the game for personal reasons." Toronto FC defeated Montreal for the second consecutive time this season, 1-0, in the first MLS game in 48 hours after five Wednesday matches were postponed. There were "meetings and calls between the two organizations, certainly among the players," on Thursday, when "feelings were expressed and concerns voiced." Impact D Luis Binks said that boycotting the game would have "sent a powerful message from two Canadian clubs." Binks: “None of us wanted to play. There’s a lot of boys in the changing room, if not everyone, who felt the right decision was to support what’s going on and try and make a stand against what’s going on in the U.S." He added, "For whatever reason, (the two clubs) didn’t come together to decide. We made it clear what we wanted. Obviously the game got played. There was a divide within the two camps. They wanted to play. We didn’t” (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 8/30).
